HANDMADE IN BELGIUM

Last Sunday, I went to the Handmade in Belgium market in Hasselt, where many lovely creative people were selling their goodies.  When I heared about it, it reminded me of ‘Hoera! Hip handwerk’ (which I posted about here, there’s a new edition this weekend and I might go and spoil you with photos again), so I really wanted to go and check out all the pretty stuff.  It was quite dark and crowded so not that easy to photograph, but I tried to give you a good impression of what I saw and which were my favourites.  I really loved the location by the way, and all the items looked so beautiful and were represented in the best way.  I think everyone did a great job and I look forward to the next edition (when I hopefully will have some many to spend, unlike this time… but I’ll tell you more about that later!)  I added links to the photos wherever I could remember the names, so feel free to check them out!

Queen Nefertete

Col Claudine, these were my absolute favourites!  They sell gorgeous peter pan collars, made out of leather, unique buttons and silver chains, so you can wear them as a necklace.  I’m so bummed but there’s no way I can afford them with my student budget, but maybe I need to save up to get one, because this could easily spice up any outfit!

Workshop Leuven, another one of my favourites.  I’ve been looking into sewing classes but haven’t really found anything until I met these girls!  They give ‘workshops’ instead of weekly lessons, where you pick a model from their catalogue and learn how to make it in one day or two or three afternoons, depending on what you like.  You can even make an appointment with two or three girlfriends, you don’t necessarily have to take the classes with strangers.  I know I’ll be trying this as soon as my friends and I can pick a date!

A little list of designers of which I don’t have a photo, but which you should check too: studio superstuff (I loved their Old town romance earrings), va-tout (their structured porcelain earrings were my favourites), and so-on concept (gorgeous earrings shaped like grandma’s best china).

THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE

1.  Birch Bird Cards, these postcards are made out of dyed birch and can be assembled into these adorable birds!  (source)

2.  Lady Bonin’s Tea Parlour, a tea parlor in a beautifully decorated caravan, which travels through South Africa.  Besides being incredibly pretty, this tea parlour tries to be as friendly for the enviroment as possible.  One of my dear friends is in South Africa for another two months and I might have friendly obligated here to go there already! 4.  Moustache clips from Urban Outfitters.  I might have a little obsession with moustaches (hence my birthday party next week being moustache themed!), so using these clips would make me smile every time!  Buy them here.

LISBON IN DETAIL

Perhaps you noticed it already in one of my previous posts about our trip to Lisbon (1, 2, 3), but almost every house in this Portugese city is covered in colorful tiles.  In Portugal, they are called ‘azulejos’ and they are very typical for this country, as production started in the 16th century and continues until today.  I photographed all my favourite patterns, so I thought, why not combine them in one post and show these little details that make this city so beautiful.

TUMBLRS THAT MAKE ME SMILE

You’ve read it well, a special edition of “things that make me smile” today, dedicated to tumblr.  As you may or may not know, I have a tumblr myself, called SHORTCUT, where I post photos and occasionaly a quote that I like.  Tumblr seems to be an entire world on it’s own, next to the blogosphere, and I think it diserves more attention!  So here are my favourite tumblrs, the one’s  that I think stand out.

1.  “Just a drop of water in an endless sea” posts beautiful photos like so many other tumblrs do.  But not like this!  Here’s a screencap of her archive to show you what I mean:

See?  So well done.

2.  One of the first tumblrs I started to follow: “inspire me now“.  If you browse this one’s archives, you’ll see that a lot of things that I post in my ‘Things that make smile’ lists, also appear on his tumblr.

3.  “Unhappy Hipsters“ posts pictures of hip designer interiors, with clever captions.  Some are better than others, but you’ll just have to see for yourself!

4.  Wire magazine has it’s own tumblr, called “Sleeves Received“, documenting gems from The Wire’s mail bag.  It’s all about the beautiful artwork that comes with cd’s.  I keep buying cd’s because I love to have something that I can hold in my hands, something that people worked hard on.

5.  “Photodonuts” presents the cream of the crop of today’s photographers.  They have a website too.

6.  “expo’86” posts art and photos just the way I like them: very clean, minimalistic and geometrical.  Definitely worth checking out!

7.  “The impossibly cool” presents you the coolest people on earth, in stunning black and white.

8.  “Concrete Proof” features a lot of photos of… concrete.  (I can’t help myself, I’m graduating as an architect in two years!)

9.  Little things shares those little things in life that we should appreciate.  Makes me smile for sure!

10.  Artist food belongs to one of the members of Marble Sounds (whom I have blogged about before here), he’s sharing pictures of all the food they get backstage at concerts.

JIMMY KETS

Jimmy Kets is one of my favourite Belgian photographers, I’m always happy to discover one of his photos in a newspaper or a magazine.  And they are not that hard to recognise!  Besides the typical colors, his photos are known for the humour that’s always present in his work.  I’ve gathered a few of my favourites, each of them linking back to the blogpost where you can often find a little more information about how this photo was realised, which I always enjoy reading.  He often makes portraits of our Belgian celebrities, but my favourite photos of his are the photos he takes in the streets: he always sees what no one else seems to notice.  Here, I’ve gathered a few of both, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

BELÉM

One day of our stay in Lisbon, was spent in Belém (which is a part of Lisbon).  Unfortunately everything was closed for visitors (including the Belém tower in the upper photo), so we just made a walk along the course of the Tague and enjoyed the view.   This is also where I took this photo!
