When my boyfriend and I decided to spend a week in Milan, the first thing that came to my mind was: “we must visit Villa Necchi!” On a rainy day in July 2019, we made our way to the iconic villa which you can only visit with a guided tour. Lucky for us, we were the only visitors that morning and received a private tour, where we discovered everything there is to know about the villa’s rich history.

In the fifties, this was the home of Gigina and Nedda Necchi, two sisters from the famous Necchi family, known for their sowing machines and flatirons. The sisters asked architect Piero Portaluppi to design a modern home for them, with bedrooms for Nedda and Gigina and her husband, spacious walk-in closets, luxurious bathrooms and spare bedrooms for their guests. The resulting interior was quite minimal for the time period and formed the background for many parties. The sisters loved to entertain and often even had royal guests! After World War II, when the villa was occupied by the Germans, the sisters wanted to get rid of its rigid style. They let Tomaso Buzzi redecorate Villa Necchi, giving it a warmer feel with elements inspired by the 19th century. The interior hasn’t changed since and still breathes grandeur and luxury. The luscious garden with swimming pool, rich material palet and the magnificent orangery are a sight for sore eyes and a must-visit when your in Milan
